The discovery of Elicina
In 1980 a Chilean family bred snails for export to the French gourmet food market. The snail handlers rapidly noticed the softness of their hands and how quickly minor cuts healed without infection or scarring.
Rigorous scientific study of the ‘Helix Aspersa Muller’ snail’s secretion confirmed that it contained an extraordinary combination of natural substances that have been proven beneficial healing properties for human skin.
It took 15 years to develop the substance into a cosmetic repair cream and Elicina was patented by the World Organisation of Patents in Geneva. Elicina was launched on to the South American health and beauty market in 1995.
Today, thousands of snails are raised and maintained in conditions close to their natural environment and no snails are harmed in the collection of their secretion.
What Elicina contains and how it works
Laboratory analysis of the snail extract found it to contain:
Allantoin – termed a ‘cell proliferant’ as this substance makes the regeneration of skin possible. It is the most effective repairing substance for scar tissue, It is also an anti-oxidant, which helps fight off free radicals, the scavengers that damage skin and speed up the aging process. The snail itself has the capacity to regenerate its own shell if broken.
Collagen – the structural protein that gives skin its rigidity and, along with elastin, is a main component of human skin and connective tissue.
Elastin – the protein that gives skin its elasticity. As we age our skin decreases its production of elastin.
Glycolic Acid (1.6%) – enhances natural exfoliation, re-hydrates, inhibits free radicals and also promotes the body’s own production of collagen.
Antibiotic Peptides – protect the skin from environmental stress and are effective against different types of bacterial commonly found in human skin infections. The peptides destroy the pathogens present on the skin and act like a protective barrier. Blocking the microbial pathway to the blood stream allows the immune system to heal damage in an environment similar to that in which a broken bone heals inside the body.
Vitamins - Vitamin A helps maintain the condition of the cell membranes, Vitamin C stimulates collagen synthesis and helps to prevent the destruction of collagen. Vitamin C also acts as an anti-oxidant, protecting the cells and Vitamin E, also an anti-oxidant, protects against damage to vital cell structures and reduces inflammation and moisture loss.
Elicina cream is 80% Chilean snail secretion and does not contain colourings or fragrance.
Elicina cream is hypoallergenic and its ingredients are biocompatible. To date there has been no record of any sensitive or allergic reaction. It has not undergone the harsh chemical and physical processing typically used to produce protein supplements found in other cosmetic creams.
Elicina is available in a 40 gram jar.
Clinical Background
As from August 2000 to March 2001, research was undertaken at the Occupational Therapy Unit of COANIQUEM, a charity in Chile focused on the rehabilitation of children who had suffered burns.
The clinical observation involved 36 patients and identified three aspects of evaluation:
Scar and graft height (in mm)
Scar and graft texture
Scar and graft pigmentation
The results of this observation concluded that Elicina helped in 93% of cases (27% showed an improvement in all three aspects evaluated, 66% in two). There were no side effects involved.
Application
FACE: Elicina is a skin regeneration cream and application should vary according to skin type. For DRY and EXTRA DRY skin apply twice a day, 3 times a week. After cleansing apply a small amount of Elicina over the entire face (avoiding eye area). Wait 5 – 10 minutes then apply your normal moisturiser. Applying a moisturiser is essential for this type of skin. For OILY skin you may apply Elicina more frequently, twice a day, 5 to 6 times a week (avoiding eye area). You may find you do not need to apply a moisturizer with this type of skin. Elicina is very effective on ACNE prone skin and you may not need to apply moisturizer in this instance, as ACNE prone skin tends to be oily.
Scars, Keloids and Burns: Elicina can be applied over old and new scars or marks. The wound must be healed before application of Elicina (for surgical wounds start using after stitches are removed). Do not apply directly to fresh wounds or burns. It can be applied to small cuts or grazes to prevent scarring. Elicina can be applied under compression treatment i.e. silicon sheets, bandages etc. Apply twice a day until desired effect is achieved. This could take 4 t0 12 weeks or more depending on age, type, size and depth of scarring or keloid.
Stretch Marks: Apply to stretch marks on any part of the body twice a day. Elicina takes about 1 – 8 months to show amazing visible results depending on the size, colouration and age of your marks. You must ensure you use it every day to achieve such results.
Elicina reduces FINE FACIAL LINES AND WRINKLES, AGE SPOTS, HYPERPIGMENTATION AND SURFACE ROUGHNESS associated with chronic sun exposure. The natural product sheds dead skin, erodes actinic keratosis lesions, contributes to and fosters the regeneration of collagen and elastin.
In general it is advisable that when using Elicina on your face you should break between treatments. Use for six weeks then break for one week. It is also advisable to always wear a sun block of you are exposed to sunlight.
